Mid-Autumn Festival 2009

Moon Goddess celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival with a feast of authentic east asian cuisine and a spectaculor Lion Dance in London Chinatown

Chinatown celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival on Sunday 11th October during one of the biggest culinary events of the year. The Chinese Moon Goddess made her first appearance in Chinatown to mark the launch of the first London Restaurant Festival.

The colourful event was organised by the London Chinatown Chinese Association (LCCA) as an inaugural patron of the London Restaurant Festival.

The highlight of the festivities was a programme of events set on a special outdoor stage, sponsored by Shaftesbury PLC, Lebara Mobile and the Empire Casino, featuring a blend of modern and traditional entertainment including, a Lion Dance, Traditional Chinese Music and Dance, Martial Arts, as well as Hip-Hop Dancing and Chinese Pop Performances. Some children learnt to make Chinese Noodles and there were Chinese dinners and other festival goodies such as Chinese Lanterns to be won.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr Leslie Ng, President of the LCCA, Madam Lu Xu, Counsellor and Consul General of the Chinese Embassy, Thomas Chan, Lord Mayor of Redbridge and the first Chinese Mayor in the UK, as well as other VIPs.

In addition to this headline event, Chinatown has been making a special effort for the London Restaurant Festival, 28 Chinatown restaurants offered mouth-watering, authentic menus with a range of exclusive events including Food Tasting and a Chopsticks Challenge. Some visitors to Chinatown also discovered the secrets of hand-making Dragon Beard Candy.

For those who could not make it to the festival there is no need to worry as there will be plenty to see, do and taste all year round in Chinatown. With top chefs from Hong Kong, China, Japan and other areas of the Far East, the authenticity of the dining experience in London Chinatown is unquestionable - just as the food is unquestionably delicious. Come and experience the entire gamut of Far Eastern cuisine, including Cantonese, Taiwanese, Szechuan, Straits Chines, Japanese, Malaysian and even Mongolian.
